First of all – climate change is real, people! You may not see the glaciers melting right in front of your eyes, but the changing weather patterns, the extreme heat and the large scale deforestation are tangible proof that something is really, really wrong. The sooner we accept this, the better. Then what do us, as normal citizens of this country, do about this?
Be aware and make aware
Most people do not believe that climate change is actually happening. Instead, they prefer to be cocooned into their own little worlds, while the world that we know and love is coming gradually to a frightening end. Hence, it is very important that proper awareness be generated within our society. However, first it is important that you yourself are well aware as to what is happening, and what the possible solutions are. Having thus learnt, you can then use your knowledge to influence those around you. This can be during family dinners, meetings at your university, lunch breaks and even on your social media platforms. What matters is that you spread the word around, as much as possible.
The other thing that we can do in our limited capacities is to adopt environmentally friendly options for your daily necessities. For an example, you can use hot water systems in Midland instead of using the normal source of electricity.
Solar hot water systems can not only help minimize the wastage of irreplaceable natural resources, but also cut down many costs for you. Opt to using public transportation as much as possible, or cycle to work. Learn smart ways you can recycle your waste – you will be amazed at how many opportunities a toilet paper roll, that you are going to throw away, can create for you.
Push for change
All citizens have the ultimate power in any State – the right to vote. Use your vote for a candidate that is determined to push for reforms and initiatives that can help save the planet we live in. This will motivate many other contestants and policy makers to do the same.
Volunteer – there are so many things you can do in your free time. It can be for a beach cleanup team, or for a campaign to help raise awareness about climate change issues. All these activities, put together, generate a strong voice against those who do not care about Mother Earth.
Advocate – join a group of civil society activists, and work with them to lobby political parties, government institutions and other related stakeholders to mobilize action towards climate change.
